Guided Reading Level Labels Freebie

I was looking for some green labels for my room and of course I wanted them for free!  I couldn't find what I was looking for so I made some.

I like circle labels but I'm too busy (lazy) to cut those all out.

Copy these onto the cardstock and laminate if you wish. Then just cut them between each card.
Easy Peasy and Free!!

I have small boxes so I have two of each!

Click on the pics to get yours for Free!!
Have a great year!

All About Me Freebie

My blog has kind of taken a back seat for the last year!  I guess I've been livin' life and have been busy - busy - busy!  Five kids can do that to you!

On top of life - I was handed a ball curve! Kindergarten!!!  I'm certified for 1-8 however, Wisconsin DPI has made some new rules such as lifetime license and allowing your administrator to place you in a grade you're not certified for with professional development for three years!  Here's to my next crazy three years!

This is an All About Me page that I have used for 19+ years when I taught first and second grade.  Each student makes one.  Mount it on construction paper and laminate.  I love looking at the previous years and so do the students.  Especially, when I have siblings.  Pick it up for FREE. Click the picture.

Well, I still want to do this with my kinders but this would be too hard, so....

Here is my version for kindergarten!
Click the picture to grab it for FREE!

I'm looking forward to starting this year with my kinders!
Any suggestions for me!?  I'll take it!

5 Ways to Talk Like a Pirate

Start by ordering some goodies to make the day extra fun!
I got mine from Amazon this year however I've also ordered from Oriental Trading in the past.

Photo Editing Apps

What super fun!  I used Make Me a Pirate! App

If you don't have access to a photo app you could always use these blank faces and let the kids add their faces.  Have them write a pirate story!  Pick these up for free!

If you have a subscription to Reading A-Z you can download a reader for Blackbeard the Pirate.  This site provides lesson plans and worksheets too!!
There are other pirate options but some are at a much higher level.

Writing Biographies Part 2 and a FREEBIE!

Part 2
Nonfiction - Text Features

So the kids have chosen the person they want to research for a Biography!  See a list of book choices from this previous posting. Here!

But before we start reading the books let's learn all about the text features.  I like to model a book and find all the text features we are learning about.  I have had most success in using the biographies by National Geographic.  They have awesome timelines and also include quotes by the person.  I find the students are able to read them independently.

I start by displaying this anchor chart. Then we look through the book as a class finding the text features.  We discuss each feature and what is the purpose of the feature.  How can it help make us better readers.

This is included in the Complete Writing Unit on Biographies in my TpT store if you're interested.

Together we read the book, The Life of Ben Franklin.  This book is written in two reading levels so I would be able to differentiate of use in small groups.  We noted many different facts about Ben Franklin.  Students wrote about 4 of them on their recording sheet.
You can pick up this recording sheet for FREE!

Students love getting out their highlighters.
With an accompanying checksheet students highlighted the text features as they found them in the book.

Then with a buddy they found text features in the biography book they chose!

Tomorrow read about Biography Research!

Spring into Math

I love to do crafts in the classroom.  Unfortunately, seems there is never enough time.  So... I decided to integrate math and art!

Skills: Symmetry and and Three Digit Addition and Subtraction

Trace the butterfly pattern.  This is in the download.  You will need to enlarge it on the copier.

I forgot to take a picture of just the drops but I just hold the bottle of paint upside down and let it drip out.  Try to overlap the colors but not too much because you do not want brown!

Fold the paper in half and smooth out the paper.  You may want a newspaper underneath because sometimes the paint leaks out.  Open up the paper and allow it to dry overnight.

This is a great book for looking at things in our world that have symmetry!

The next day fold it back and cut on the pattern.  Add a folded pipe cleaner to the head.  I like to staple rather than glue so they stay on!!

Add some cute googly eyes and a mouth!

Give each child 2 or more addition problems and the blank subtraction problems.

Students add the three digit problems with regrouping and then check their work with subtraction.

Glue them to the butterfly and you have some very cute hallway decorations!!

Click the cover to go to my TpT store and pick up the butterfly template and addition problems.

Have fun!

4.G.A.3Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
2.NBT.B.7Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
